The Friends of Sardar Patel Award Association (FSPAA) was organized in 1999, in conjunction with the creation of the Sardar Patel Award at UCLA. The endowment was established by a core group of individuals who, along with the UCLA history department, created and funded the endowment. The endowment was funded with the initial amount of $250,000, with the understanding that it would be able to generate an annual income to confer an award of $10,000. On October 31st, 1999, the 124th birthday of Sardar Patel, an event was held to celebrate the inception of the Sardar Patel Award. It was celebrated with the showing of the movie "Sardar" followed by a banquet. The first fundraising event at Gaylord Restaurant was held on May 2nd, with Mr. Uka Solanki as the guest of Honor. During that event there were moving speeches given by many members of the FSPAA. As a result of Mr. Solanki's generous contribution, the attendees enthusiasm was triggered and over $100,000 was pledged. Thanks to the several fund raising events arranged by various committee members and individual efforts of many, the target of $250,000 was almost reached. As a result of an Idea and determination from committee members, the FSPAA has created an endowment which will continue for generations to come. |
